Social Security Disability (SSI/SSDI) Advocacy

What is SSI/SSDI?

  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is cash assistance payments to aged, blind, and disabled individuals (including children under age 18) who have limited income and resources.
  • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides benefits to disabled or blind individuals who are "insured" by workers' contributions to the Social Security trust fund.
  • Further information can be found at:  www.socialsecurity.gov

 Advocacy Program

The program is grant funded and designed to provide intensive case management for TANF/VIEW participants who are medically exempt during the course of their TANF eligibility.

Once a participant meets the social security guidelines and fits the profile for SSI/SSDI, he/she is referred to the SSI/SSDI advocate.  The advocate works individually with any participant who wants and needs to pursue disability.

The SSI/SSDI advoate provides assistance in filling out and obtaining all necessary forms, in supplying medical background information and in coordinating transportation to and from any Social Security Administration appointments, medical evaluations, interviews, and hearings with the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ).
